Sign, sign, everywhere a sign

I keep thinking about the 1971 hit song Signs by Five Man Electric Band every time I look at my cupboard. As a teenager, I remember singing these familiar lyrics over and over again with my friends:

"Sign, sign, everywhere a sign, blocking out the scenery, breaking my mind, do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?"

Now, before you think I've lost my mind, I will explain why this song is going through my head.

A tip from my Weight Watcher's leader, Melissa, this week was to make signs and hang them on your cupboards and refrigerator as reminders not to eat unless you are truly hungry. It might sound silly, but she swears it works and is one of the keys that helped her lose her weight. I told her I struggle with stress eating, so she made me this sign before I left the meeting Friday.

As crazy as it sounds, it does seem to be helping. I hung it on the door of my snack cabinet. (My snack cupboard is filled with healthy snacks like nuts, pretzels, Weight Watcher snacks, popcorn, etc., but when I give in to stress eating I can devour everything in sight, turning a healthy snack into a 1000 calorie disaster.) Melissa also encouraged me to write down favorite quotes and hang them where I will see them on a regular basis. I'm willing to try anything that diverts my attention away from mindless eating, even if it means plastering my cupboards and refrigerator with inspiring quotes and notes.

I was planning just to keep the sign up when I was home alone and take it down when I get company, but I decided to leave it up. I'm not going to worry about what people think. My nine-year-old grandson, Austin, found the sign quite amusing and thought it was pretty funny.

I'm determined to do whatever it takes to get this weight off.  When waging war on obesity, it's sometimes necessary to resort to desperate measures. Even if having signs on my cupboards seems crazy to others, I have to do what works for me. I'm going to work on adding my favorite quotes this week.

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign....
